Each stage has at least one boss encounter, and as you progress through the game you'll both collect new weapons to add to your arsenal and upgrade the ones you already own using coins you collect.

You achieve this goal by fighting your way through a series of linear stages, running, gunning and jumping your way to victory. In Kero Blaster, you take on the role of a heavily armed frog tasked with clearing weird black furry things off a network of teleporters. Instead, Kero Blaster is more akin to something like Contra or old-school, pre-Symphony of the Night Castlevanias than anything else - and, like its predecessor payed loving homage to the NES era, so too does Kero Blaster flawlessly blend a retro aesthetic with a superbly smooth, fluid control scheme that works equally well on keyboard as it does on a gamepad. (At least until the true final boss man, I hated that thing.)ДЄs such, Cave Story was always going to be a hard act to follow, so it's perhaps wise that Pixel chose not to follow it up with a direct sequel. A modern-day Metroid that combined retro graphics with the subtle refinements of more recent games, Cave Story was a masterpiece that enchanted and enthralled almost everyone who played it. Such is the case with Daisuke 'Pixel' Amaya's work, as anyone who played his previous work Cave Story will attest. In many cases they're not trying to say anything more complicated than that with their work they're simply inviting you to share in the joy of play through their creation. Sometimes you play a game and it's clear the creator just loves games. Get it here Playism (PC), App Store (iOS).Of course that is still a positive thing, but as someone who has played through the game a few times, IвЂ™d only suggest it to fans if youвЂ™re either dying to play some more Cave Story, or looking to scratch a Metroidvania itch on the Nintendo Switch.

It uses the upgraded visuals of previous ports, and does feature multiple soundtrack options, but outside of that itвЂ™s essentially Cave Story as you remember it. I think itвЂ™s priced fairly at $29.99, but if youвЂ™ve played through the game on WiiWare, PC, and so on, thereвЂ™s not a lot of meaningful additions being made to this version of the game. If youвЂ™ve never experienced Cave Story, youвЂ™ll definitely be in for a treat.ДЇor everyone else it might be a tougher sell. ItвЂ™s one of the earliest indie Metroidvania titles out there, but itвЂ™s also one of the best. There are new weapons to acquire, heart containers to expand, and a whole lot of jumping around. From there youвЂ™ll meet the somewhat angry, oppressed race of rabbit creatures that inhabit the game, start chasing after a missing girl, and come across some solid boss fights while checking out a variety of areas. YouвЂ™ll quickly encounter a bit of danger before discovering your first weapon, which will in turn let you break through a small barrier, at which point youвЂ™ll expose yourself to a much larger world to explore. The onset of the game drops you into the role of a small, pixelated protagonist with no name. Seriously, if you havenвЂ™t played Cave Story before, this is a fantastic version of the game. It controls well, the exploration aspect is top notch, and the music is great.

ItвЂ™s a great looking game on the Switch, perfect to pick-up and play in portable mode, and it remains one of the best Metroidvania style games around, despite being 13 years old at this point.

The game has been ported a number of times since then, mostly to Nintendo platforms, so needless to say it feels right at home on the Nintendo Switch.ДЄs far as ports go, Cave Story+ appears to be pretty flawless. If youвЂ™re not familiar with Cave Story, itвЂ™s a Metroidvania style game that was first released in 2004 for PC, developed by one guy, Daisuke Amaya, who clearly poured a lot of love into those original diminutive sprites. Cave Story+ is the newest indie title to launch on the Nintendo Switch, a platform thatвЂ™s actually represented indie developers pretty well so far, thanks in part to publisher Nicalis.
